Tarte Tatin Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Caramelized Apples:
- 4-5 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and quartered
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
For the Crust:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 2-3 tbsp cold water
Instructions:
Prepare the Crust: In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, 1 tbsp at a time, until the dough forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Make the Caramelized Apples: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In an ovenproof skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sugar and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture turns golden brown. Arrange the apple quarters in the skillet, cut-side up, and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the apples are caramelized and softened.
Add the Crust: Roll out the chilled dough into a circle slightly larger than the skillet. Place the dough over the apples, tucking the edges down into the skillet.
Bake: Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
Invert and Serve: Let the tart cool for a few minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate, so the apples are on top. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
