Knafeh Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Knafeh:
- 1 lb kataifi (shredded phyllo dough), thawed
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cups sweet cheese (such as Nabulsi or ricotta cheese), shredded or crumbled
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
For the Sugar Syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp rose water or orange blossom water (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Sugar Syrup: In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in rose water or orange blossom water if desired. Set aside to cool.
Prepare the Kataifi Dough: In a large bowl, separate the kataifi strands. Pour the melted butter over the kataifi and mix until all strands are well coated.
Assemble the Knafeh: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread half of the buttered kataifi dough in the baking dish, pressing it down to form an even layer. Distribute the cheese evenly over the kataifi. Top with the remaining kataifi, pressing gently.
Bake: Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the kataifi is golden and crispy.
Add the Syrup: Remove the knafeh from the oven and immediately pour the cooled sugar syrup over it. Allow it to soak for a few minutes.
Serve: Serve warm, garnished with chopped pistachios or a sprinkle of extra rose water if desired.
