Baklava Recipe
Ingredients:
For the Baklava:
- 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 1/2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 1/2 cups pistachios, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
For the Honey Syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 cinnamon stick
- A few whole cloves (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Nut Filling: In a bowl, combine the walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
Assemble the Baklava: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each layer with melted butter. Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Continue layering the phyllo and nuts until all the nuts are used, finishing with a final layer of 10 sheets of phyllo, each brushed with butter.
Cut and Bake: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and crispy.
Make the Syrup: While the baklava bakes, combine water, sugar, honey, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, and cloves in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Add the Syrup: Pour the warm syrup over the hot baklava as soon as it comes out of the oven. Allow the baklava to absorb the syrup for several hours or overnight.
Serve: Serve at room temperature, garnished with extra chopped nuts if desired.
